IRRIGATION SCHEME FOR AGRICULTURAL AREAS AT BETUMPU AND LIMPAKI CLIENT: DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS END-USER: DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE CONTRACT SUM: B$7.6 MILLION
Scheme evaluation involved determining the optimal supply and distribution network to 406 ha of mixed farming allotments. The source of water was an existing low lying reservoir at Imang, some 10 km from the farm allotments.
Following consideration of engineering practicalities, water quality, endusers, economics, weather regime and dam capacity, major components of the scheme were selected. They include:-
Raw water from the reservoir will be filtered and pumped to the holding tank at 220 litres/sec and delivered to the allotments over a 12-hour period at a minimum head of 16 metres. A SCADA Telemetry System will enable monitoring a control of the system.
Relative advantages of the scheme are: comparatively high residual pressures within the network; only one pumping station; simplicity of construction; easily expanded low level of manpower to operate; and metered valves at allotments enable automatic shutoff and gauging of waterflow for consumer billing.
The project is awaiting calling of tender for anticipated construction in 2002 and commissioning in 2003. | |||
